Dr. Ir. Erik Elgersma

About Erik

Dr Ir Erik Elgersma gained his analytical expertise at Delft University of Technology, where he earned his PhD in 1992. However, competitive intelligence extends far beyond analysis alone. To broaden his expertise, Erik pursued executive education, first mastering the field of finance at London Business School — because without finance, there can be no solid (competitive) analysis. In the field of strategy, he trained at the business schools of Harvard and INSEAD.

Since 2019, Dr Ir Elgersma has been an independent strategy consultant, specialising in supporting organisations in setting up processes from data collection through to the development of strategic plans.

He is a visiting lecturer at the School of Business and Economics of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where he teaches International Strategy, and a research fellow at Vlerick Business School in Belgium.

Since 1996, he has been active in strategic analysis — first at Akzo Nobel, and later for 20 years at FrieslandCampina, where he served, among other roles, as global head of Market and Competitive Intelligence.

In his last organisation, he served, among other roles, as Global Head of Market and Competitive Intelligence.

Erik is the author of three books on the strategic (financial) assessment of organisations other than one’s own. His latest book is Competing on Knowledge Concurreren op Kennis.
